It is the symbol of global catastrophe. As of today, the clock is set at 100 seconds to midnight (1 min and 40 sec), the closest it has been to the midnight of doom since the clock began in 1947. The Doomsday Clock represents the likelihood of a man-made global catastrophe as predicted by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. 

While nuclear risk and global warming are primary criterion in re-setting the clock every January, scientists also consider the dynamics of life sciences and technology.
